The artificial intelligence model GPT-6 Astra decoded in six hours an encrypted letter from Napoleon to General Auguste de Marmont, containing 1,300 characters written in a homophonic cipher system. The document, which reveals the positions of 210,000 men (40,000 Bavarians, 30,000 Poles, 80,000 French in Bayreuth and 60,000 in Ulm and Donauworth), corrects the dating retained since 1969 by placing the letter’s origin in late March 1809, rather than 1807. This decryption, validated by cryptologist Satoshi Tomokiyo, restores a key of 155 distinct signs that could enable the decoding of other letters using the same cipher system. It demonstrates the ability of AI models to significantly reduce the analysis time of specialized historical documents.
