More than 60 foreign workers, primarily from India, signed agreements on Wednesday to receive an average of 45,000 euros as part of a 31-million-euro settlement with Alabama-based American construction company Caddell Construction. This is the largest settlement ever obtained for labor exploitation in Europe, with payments reaching nearly 90,000 euros for some workers. The workers had been paid less than $2 per hour, had money illegally deducted from their wages for housing, and were denied overtime pay for workdays of up to 10 hours, six days a week. Nearly 480 workers in total are expected to receive payouts, including approximately 300 still working on the U.S. consulate construction site in Milan.
