Five African heads of state inaugurated on Wednesday a $16-billion oil refinery project in East Africa. The refinery will be built in Lamu, Kenya, with a processing capacity of 700,000 barrels per day and is expected to be operational in 40 months. Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote and his group will construct the facility, which will be supplied with oil by neighboring countries. However, the project faces local opposition, including legal proceedings regarding land ownership and protests from residents demanding more compensation.
