US imports of computers, accessories and semiconductors reached a record $86.9 billion in September 2026, up 151% from a year earlier. Computer imports rose by $7.6 billion and accessory imports by $5.7 billion, while semiconductor imports fell by $1.2 billion. At an annualized pace, these imports now exceed $1 trillion and have doubled in two years, driven by the construction of artificial intelligence data centers. Capital goods imports hit a record $158 billion, while technology products accounted for about 61% of the US trade deficit, including a $64 billion deficit in computers and semiconductors. A substantial share of the value of these imports flows back to suppliers in Taiwan and South Korea, making the boom a major component of economic growth, the trade deficit and supply chains.
