Zcash activated the NU7 upgrade on its mainnet on November 5 at block height 3,543,405. The target block time was reduced from 75 to 25 seconds, while block rewards were adjusted to maintain roughly the same pace of new ZEC issuance and the number of blocks between halvings was tripled. The new Network Sustainability Mechanism removes 60% of transaction fees from circulation and will gradually reissue them starting at block 8,939,664, expected in 2031, without changing the 21 million ZEC supply cap. NU7 also disables version 4 transactions, leaving about 12,224 ZEC unspendable in the original Sprout privacy pool, and a proposal to contribute 50,000 ZEC to the mechanism is under consideration. After the upgrade, ZEC briefly fell to around $1,222 before rebounding and recently traded near $1,290, following a gain of more than 150% year to date in 2026.
