IBM activated its most advanced quantum computer, the IBM Quantum System Two, in Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood on November 6, 2026. The system runs on the 120-qubit Nighthawk r2 processor, which provides improved connectivity and approximately 30% greater circuit complexity than IBM’s previous Heron-class processors. It is temporarily housed at the University of Chicago and is expected to move to the Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park, which remains under construction on the former South Works site. IBM plans to establish the National Quantum Algorithm Center there, alongside a delivery center expected to create 750 full-time technology jobs. One day before the Chicago launch, the company introduced an error-correction platform developed with AMD and Oak Ridge National Laboratory, while targeting quantum advantage by the end of 2026.
