Autonomous AI Hacking? Ripple CTO Emeritus Says He Picked ‘Right Time to Retire’

David Schwartz, one of the architects of the XRP Ledger and Ripple’s CTO emeritus, says his retirement from active development, which began in November, coincided with a major shift in cybersecurity. In a test on the Linux kernel, OpenAI’s model identified 2,308 potential flaws, confirmed hundreds of privilege-escalation vulnerabilities and produced 291 working proofs of concept for memory leaks. The researchers also documented at least ten previously unknown classes of hacking methods, while API credits cost $1.2 million. The autonomous discovery of zero-day vulnerabilities within hours could reduce the relevance of manual auditing of open-source code, which underpins blockchain security. Schwartz nevertheless continues to monitor the XRP Ledger, including a node handling about 110,000 incoming messages per second with more than 550 active peers.
