FBI Blames North Korea for $6B Binance Hack as Exchange Reopens Withdrawals

The FBI attributed the theft of more than $6 billion in virtual assets from Binance, around October 29, 2026, to a North Korean hacking group known as TraderTraitor. U.S. authorities published hundreds of suspect addresses and sought to block the funds, while a “significant portion” of the stolen crypto was reportedly frozen shortly after the attack. Binance progressively resumed withdrawals on Sunday, processing $4.649 billion in withdrawals and $1.01 billion in deposits within nine and a half hours before reopening fiat withdrawals in U.S. dollars and several other currencies. The exchange said it had replenished approximately 95% of the affected assets, would absorb the financial loss and raised $6 billion from its corporate treasury, insurance fund and SAFU emergency fund. The reopening produced net outflows of $3.64 billion, equal to 2.1% of the $171 billion in assets Binance reported, while spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $643.2 million in outflows on Friday.
