Gold and Bitcoin occupy the bottom two spots among the 21 major asset classes tracked by Creative Planning, a situation never observed since the data began in 2011. As of October 23, gold had fallen 7.5% and Bitcoin 7.3% year to date, before their losses widened to 10% and more than 11%, respectively. Higher oil prices and renewed expectations of monetary tightening weighed on both assets, while commodities gained more than 50% and US large-cap stocks rose more than 12%. After gaining 64% in 2025, gold briefly reached a record $5,500 per ounce in January 2026 before falling below $4,000, while Bitcoin dropped from its $126,000 peak to $80,000. Bitcoin nevertheless retains an annualized return of roughly 120.6% since 2011, compared with 6.3% for gold.
