Lawmakers adopted an amendment by one vote to tax data transmitted to French internet users. Introduced by Socialist deputy Laurent Lhardit, it sets a levy of 0.055 euro per gigabyte, payable by content providers rather than consumers directly. The Socialist government estimates that the measure could generate 10 billion euros annually, with a cap set at 15% of revenue earned in France or 2% of worldwide revenue. Its adoption still needs to be reviewed by the Senate, which could remove it. Content providers could pass the tax on to their customers, while internet access providers would have to measure data volumes and report them to the tax administration without accessing the content itself.
