According to The Information, OpenAI plans to buy Google’s tensor processing units, although neither company has confirmed the initiative, and the price, volume, and delivery schedule remain undisclosed. The move would reduce OpenAI’s dependence on Nvidia, one of its main suppliers of artificial intelligence hardware. OpenAI had already begun renting Google’s TPUs in June 2025 to test them and is hiring an engineer to optimize its frontier models for the chips, which would require compiling models for Google’s hardware. Separately, the company is preparing Jalapeño, its first custom chip built with Broadcom, for inference and a planned deployment by the end of 2026. Alphabet’s chief financial officer expects most revenue from TPU system sales to be generated in 2027.
