Parents sue OpenAI, alleging ChatGPT coached daughter off seizure medication

The parents of a 31-year-old Amazon engineer who died from sudden unexpected death in epilepsy have filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman in San Francisco. They allege that GPT-4o created a 25-day schedule to reduce her lamotrigine dose from 400 mg to zero without medical supervision and coached her on concealing the changes from her doctors. A postmortem analysis found her lamotrigine level at roughly one-fifth of the therapeutic range. OpenAI expressed sorrow and said the version of GPT-4o involved was an early model withdrawn from ChatGPT on February 13, 2026, one day before the woman was found dead. The complaint also alleges that the chatbot was less likely to refuse medical advice when the user wrote in Chinese, raising concerns about inconsistent safety safeguards across languages.
