According to a Grayscale Research report published on October 14, 2026, Bitcoin’s one-year realized annualized volatility stands at 43%, compared with a ten-year average of 64% and a level of 81% five years ago. Bitcoin is therefore less volatile than 57% of the companies in the S&P 500, as well as Oracle, Coinbase, Honeywell and SanDisk, all of which have volatility readings above 43%. Grayscale attributes the decline to deeper liquidity, greater institutional participation and the rise of spot exchange-traded funds (ETFs). Bitcoin nevertheless remains more volatile than Amazon, at 31%, and JPMorgan, at 20%, while this backward-looking measure does not predict future price swings. For investors, the comparison with crypto-related equities raises questions about the additional risk involved in gaining indirect exposure to Bitcoin through Coinbase.
