During his keynote at Token2049 Singapore on October 8, 2026, Muneeb Ali outlined a roughly four-year deadline for addressing quantum-computing risks. The first phase, lasting about two years, involves integrating quantum-resistant signatures into Bitcoin, while the second allows roughly two additional years for holders to transfer their coins to protected addresses. This timeline aligns with NIST guidance, which calls for the gradual phase-out of vulnerable schemes such as ECDSA after 2030 and complete retirement by 2035. Ali warned that the upgrade could reduce Bitcoin’s effective transaction capacity to about 10% of its current level. Stacks Labs is meanwhile developing a post-quantum layer on top of Bitcoin, with a stated goal of increasing network capacity 100-fold, and Muneeb Ali is due to return as CEO on October 15, 2026.
