Bitcoin 0.1 Rebuilt Byte by Byte: Satoshi Nakamoto’s Machine Betrayed by Its Executable

Share

A developer recompiled bitcoin.exe from Bitcoin 0.1’s original source code and obtained a file strictly identical to the one distributed in 2009, with the same SHA-256 hash and a size of 6,440,960 bytes. The reconstruction was performed on Linux using Wine to emulate 32-bit Windows and confirms the use of the MinGW GCC 3.4.5 toolchain, as well as the absence of any hidden program in the executable. A Berkeley DB test and the compilation path embedded in the binary indicate that the file was most likely compiled under Windows XP. The reconstructed archive corresponds to the January 10, 2009 update rather than the launch-day package, no verified copy of which has survived.
