Clashes erupted in Paris at the end of a large march against education funding and rising living costs. The Interior Ministry counted 410,000 participants nationwide, while the CGT union estimated nearly 800,000. After masked protesters threw objects and fireworks, authorities responded with tear gas, deafening sound grenades and water cannons before making nearly 1,000 arrests with the support of 70,000 officers. The movement, which began at a high school southeast of Paris, is challenging Emmanuel Macron during the final months of his presidency and has drawn support from the National Rally and Jean-Luc Mélenchon. Fires were reported in Marseille and Lyon, several protests were banned, shops were boarded up and museums closed as a precaution.
