Ethereum postponed the Glamsterdam upgrade on the Hoodi testnet, originally scheduled for October 26, to examine the risks associated with gas changes and their interaction with existing smart contracts. ChainSecurity identified 13 real-world examples of contracts potentially affected by EIP-8037 and EIP-8038, which could weaken protections against insufficient gas griefing. According to the researchers, returning gas after a failed operation could allow a contract to continue executing and permanently record a failed operation, potentially removing a user’s ability to retry a valid action. The findings raise uncertainty about Glamsterdam’s mainnet timeline, which had been considered for early December pending successful Hoodi testing. Glamsterdam had already been activated on Sepolia on October 6.
