The US Office of the Comptroller of the Currency finalized rules implementing the GENIUS Act, establishing requirements for reserves, redemptions, risk management, reporting and regulatory supervision. The framework takes effect on January 18, 2027 and will also affect exchanges, payment providers and financial institutions. USDC, which already has an established US regulatory positioning, could gain ground among institutional clients, while Tether must adapt its international business to the conditions for accessing the US market. USDT remains the market leader with a 60.7% share, compared with 23.9% for USDC, bringing their combined share to 84.6%. The prohibition on rewards paid directly by issuers does not ban third-party incentive programs, but regulators will assess each arrangement to determine whether it circumvents the law.
