Eric Schmidt’s path to a $20 billion Anthropic windfall began with an introduction from his ex, Cami Clark—now Dario Amodei’s wife

Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt owns about 1% of Anthropic, a stake that could be worth $20 billion if the AI company is valued at $2 trillion when it goes public. Schmidt was introduced to Dario Amodei through Cami Clark, whom he dated from 2011 to 2014 before she began dating Amodei and later married him. He invested tens of millions of dollars in Anthropic’s 2021 Series A funding round, when the company was valued at $461 million, compared with $965 billion after its May 28 funding round. In the first half of the year, Anthropic generated $16.3 billion in revenue, up from $1.1 billion a year earlier, but reported an $80.7 billion accounting loss, including $72 billion tied to the revaluation of its convertible debt. The company spent $9 billion on computing infrastructure, signed $450 billion in cloud computing deals over the next decade, and would need annual profits of $59 billion to $79 billion to justify a $2 trillion valuation.
