Hungarian police arrested György Matolcsy, the former central bank governor and former economy minister under Viktor Orbán, on suspicion of economic fraud, the use of a forged private document and significant financial damage. The Central Prosecutor’s Office said it was conducting coordinated investigative actions in several locations but did not confirm at that stage that the case involved Matolcsy, who has denied any wrongdoing. His tenure as governor, from 2013 to 2025, was marked by allegations involving public funding granted to central bank foundations and the purchase of real estate at inflated prices. Prosecutors have not yet made clear whether his detention relates to those endowments or the property purchases. Since taking office, Prime Minister Péter Magyar has established a National Asset Recovery and Protection Office with investigative and prosecutorial powers to accelerate inquiries into misuse of public funds under the previous government.
