Anthropic has appointed Christopher Stubbs, a Harvard University astrophysicist, to its Long-Term Benefit Trust, which can elect a majority of the company’s seven-member board. The appointment, the first involving a physicist, fills one of two vacancies and comes as the company prepares for an IPO potentially valuing it above $2 trillion. A former Harvard dean of science and inaugural project scientist for the Vera C. Rubin Observatory, Stubbs is best known for his research on dark energy and received the Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics in 2015. The Public Benefit Corporation also plans to place 5% of its shares in a separate Public Benefit Fund to support philanthropic organizations and potentially people adversely affected by artificial intelligence.
