French MPs backed on Oct. 16 an amendment imposing tax on gains from swapping appreciated crypto for MiCA e-money tokens, even without cashing out in euros. Lawmakers rejected by a 75-to-18 vote a proposal to carry forward unused crypto losses for ten years. Amendment I-3898 passed by a narrow 38-to-37 margin with 25 abstentions and would take effect Jan. 1, 2027 if the finance bill becomes law. This measure replaces the previously available tax deferral on crypto-to-stablecoin exchanges with an immediate taxable event. Current rules only allow crypto losses to offset crypto gains in the same tax year, with no carryforward possible.
