Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino claims that address freezes drove a 94% drop in Iran-linked stablecoin transaction volumes since 2023. A US Senate report identified that 84% of 846 sanctioned wallets with Iranian links predominantly used USDT. Tether blocked approximately $550 million in USDT linked to Iran in 2026, with over $470 million frozen in two major operations in April and July. Independent data from TRM Labs corroborates this trend, showing USDT’s share in Iran-attributed wallets fell from 67% in 2025 to 14% in August 2026. Ardoino highlights a four-week lead time before official sanctions from the US Treasury and Israeli regulators.
