Ledger launched Ledger Atom, an $849 device with physical tamper protection, as the company investigated mass thefts involving modified hardware wallets. Criminals installed malicious components on genuine devices, returned them through Southeast Asian resellers, and then stole customers’ recovery phrases to drain their cryptocurrency. Ledger suspended sales from authorized resellers in the region and requires that returned devices are never resold. According to Chainalysis, one of the largest victims was an alleged scam operator who lost over 60 BTC, worth approximately $4.8 million, accumulated through an online fraud scheme. Ledger Atom deliveries are targeted for 2027.
