OpenAI is reportedly in preliminary negotiations to acquire Trail of Bits, a New York-based cybersecurity firm specializing in smart contract and DeFi protocol audits. Founded in 2012, Trail of Bits has audited major protocols including Uniswap, Aave, and Arbitrum, and developed open source tools like Slither and Echidna, widely used to detect vulnerabilities in blockchain code. The two companies have been collaborating since June on a joint program to secure open source software. This acquisition could however compromise Trail of Bits’ independence and raise questions about the continuation of its audits for existing crypto protocols. For OpenAI, the expertise also addresses a strategic challenge: as AI agents increasingly manage cryptocurrency autonomously, the reliability of the smart contracts they interact with will become essential.
