Gartner forecasts that more than $3.5 trillion in AI infrastructure investment could be written down by 2030, a figure that could exceed $4 trillion by 2032. Enterprise and consumer AI revenue tied to data centers is projected at a maximum of $3.6 trillion over the same period, less than half of the expected $7 trillion in cumulative investment. To earn a 12% return on invested capital, the industry would need $8.5 trillion in cumulative revenue. More than 80% of specialized cloud service providers, known as neoclouds, are expected to cease operating independently by 2030, due to cost pressures and a lack of differentiation from large hyperscalers.
