Solana has scheduled its Alpenglow upgrade for October 21, targeting a 99% reduction in transaction finality times from 12.8 seconds to approximately 150 milliseconds. The upgrade replaces the TowerBFT consensus system with a new mechanism called Votor, which allows validators to exchange votes directly and reach network-wide agreement faster. The migration requires validators representing at least 82% of staked SOL to sign a genesis certificate to establish the new consensus system. The 150-millisecond finality target remains theoretical and will depend on network conditions and validator participation. Validators must use the Agave 4.3.0 software, as Firedancer and Frankendancer clients will not be supported during the migration phase.
