‘Bunker mode’ won’t protect your crypto, critics say

Cryptography experts, including Johns Hopkins professor Matthew Green, are warning about a potential break of elliptic curve cryptography (ECDSA), arguing that the mathematical structures of these curves could make them more vulnerable than hash functions. However, Coinbase’s head of cryptography Yehuda Lindell and Trezor analyst Lucien Bourdon maintain there is no evidence that the mathematical assumptions underpinning ECDSA have been weakened. Critics also point out that simply moving funds to fresh addresses may not be sufficient if an extended public key (xpub) has already been shared with a wallet app or third party, which would already possess the information needed to derive the public keys. Ethereum is developing a post-quantum roadmap using hash-based signatures and ZK proof aggregation, while Solana could deploy an upgrade allowing users to migrate to a safer signature scheme.
