Tampered Ledger devices in stores: MediaMarkt removes products as precaution

Share

European retailer MediaMarktSaturn has suspended sales of Ledger hardware wallets in all stores and online following a report of hardware tampering by a German customer. The implant sits inside the device, reads the 24-word seed phrase displayed during setup, and transmits it via LTE using a pre-installed eSIM, without affecting the secure element or modifying transactions. Ledger states it has no indication of compromise to its infrastructure and is analyzing suspect devices through its Le Donjon program. Former Mt. Gox CEO Mark Karpelès also reported that a Ledger Flex purchased at Singapore’s Changi Airport contained a spy implant. Confirmed losses linked to the CryptoBilis distribution channel are estimated at over 103 million dollars according to unverified third-party sources.
