Anthropic warns ‘AI worms’ may autonomously spread across devices like a virus

Share

Anthropic has warned about the emergence of rogue AI worms capable of self-replicating and spreading autonomously across connected devices, similar to computer viruses. These worms could target everyday devices such as Android smart TVs, connected appliances and cameras. According to researchers, small AI models could be months away from being capable of self-replicating on commercial IoT devices, representing a threat that would be difficult to contain due to the lack of a centralized shutdown point. This warning follows growing concerns about cryptocurrency security: approximately 6.26 million BTC, nearly one-third of the global supply, sits in addresses vulnerable to AI or quantum computing attacks. Haseeb Qureshi, managing partner at Dragonfly, however dismissed these warnings as “cryptographic doomerism”, arguing that migrating to fresh addresses is not a real solution.
