Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin said at the 2026 Network State Conference in Singapore that artificial intelligence could accelerate the network’s roadmap by decades. AI is now handling a substantial share of the research and coding required by the Lean Roadmap, Ethereum’s plan to overhaul its core protocol, including formal verification in Lean 4. Without it, some goals could have taken until 2040 or even 2050 to achieve. The Hegota upgrade, expected around 2027, will be the last “normal” fork in Ethereum’s history, before a shift toward advanced cryptographic methods and quantum resistance. Buterin remains nuanced: while AI accelerates technical work, it also raises security concerns, with formal verification serving as a safeguard against the risks AI itself introduces.
