U.S. President Donald Trump announced a deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin to purchase Russian diesel just weeks after signing sweeping Russia sanctions legislation. Russia will supply over 300,000 tons of diesel immediately, followed by an additional 500,000 tons in November, 1 million tons shortly after, and 3 million tons within a short period. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy sharply criticized the deal, calling it a “weak decision” and accusing Russia of seeking “backroom deals” to buy time in the war. The U.S. Treasury suspended sanctions on Russian diesel for six months until April 2027, with Trump stating that lower fuel prices for Americans were his “greatest priority.” The national average price of diesel in the United States was $6.23 per gallon, after hitting a record $6.52 on September 22.
