Zcash developers plan to add post-quantum signature support for transparent transactions in January to protect payments from future quantum computing threats. This upgrade targets approximately 70% of circulating ZEC, representing the largest attack surface on the network. The target follows Ethereum researcher Justin Drake’s « bunker mode » warning about AI and quantum computing risks, which triggered an approximately 11% drop in ZEC. No official activation date has been confirmed, with January remaining a development target rather than a set date. Shielded transactions, which require a more complex upgrade path, will be addressed separately through the Epoch project, aiming for production-ready post-quantum cryptography by the end of 2027.
