USA Today Co. and 18 affiliated newspapers filed a lawsuit against OpenAI on October 8, 2026, in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. They allege that OpenAI trained its AI models on hundreds of thousands of articles from their publications without a license or compensation. The suit seeks more than $250 million in damages and the destruction of any models trained on their copyrighted work. According to the filing, more than 160,000 entries from the plaintiffs’ domains appear in OpenAI’s WebText corpus, including 83,266 from usatoday.com alone. The plaintiffs also accuse OpenAI of removing copyright management information, which would constitute a violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.
