Ethereum researcher Justin Drake has called on the blockchain industry to prepare for bunker mode amid advances in artificial intelligence cryptography. OpenAI reportedly solved a century-old mathematical problem, suggesting that current cryptographic algorithms, particularly ECDSA used to secure blockchains, could be compromised sooner than anticipated. When users spend crypto, their public key becomes visible and could be reverse-engineered by advanced AI to generate private keys and steal funds. Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin supported the warning but cautioned that rushed address migration could lead to fund losses from misconfigured setups. Experts remain divided on the severity of the threat, with some believing it will take time before AI can crack current cryptography.
