A federal jury in Manhattan found Jonathan Spalletta, a 36-year-old cybersecurity consultant, guilty of computer fraud and money laundering on October 7. In April 2021, he had stolen approximately $55 million through two attacks on the cryptocurrency platform Uranium Finance, exploiting vulnerabilities in smart contracts to withdraw funds without counterpart. He subsequently laundered part of the funds through Tornado Cash before purchasing rare collectibles including a first-edition Pokémon card for $750,000, a Black Lotus card for $500,000, and a Roman coin for over $600,000. Authorities seized $31 million in cryptocurrencies and several collectibles from his residence. Sentencing is scheduled for February 16, 2027, with potential penalties of up to 10 years for computer fraud and up to 20 years for money laundering.
