Justin Drake, researcher at the Ethereum Foundation, proposed on October 7, 2026 a controlled migration plan for funds to fresh addresses with unexposed public keys. This “bunker mode” proposal aims to prepare for a theoretical AI-assisted attack on the ECDSA algorithm before quantum computing reaches maturity, without constituting evidence that Bitcoin or Ethereum cryptography has been compromised. According to Drake, breaking ECDSA would mean recovering a private key in about a week using existing hardware such as a large GPU cluster. He recommended that major platforms like Binance, Robinhood, Bitfinex and Tether strengthen their cold storage practices. The Ethereum Foundation has formed a dedicated post-quantum team and Vitalik Buterin has outlined plans for quantum-resistant measures.
