The U.S. trade deficit widened by 13.7% to $105.6 billion in August, the highest since March 2025’s $140 billion, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis. Imports rose 4.3% to $420.8 billion while exports grew 2.2% to $315.2 billion. AI-driven demand for overseas hardware contributed $200 billion to the deficit in April alone, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis. Economists attribute the ineffectiveness of Trump’s tariffs to their volatile nature, which has prevented companies from making long-term supply chain adjustments.
