The average household in the top 0.1% in the United States now holds approximately $204 million in wealth, or 7.7 times that of the rest of the top 1%, a record ratio since 1989. Since the end of 2019, the top 0.1%’s wealth has more than doubled, rising from $13.4 trillion to nearly $28 trillion in the second quarter of 2026. The rest of the top 1% saw its wealth grow by 68% over the same period, from $19.3 trillion to $32.5 trillion. This gap is largely explained by asset composition: over half of the top 0.1%’s assets are invested in stocks and mutual funds, while the rest of the top 1% holds more real estate and retirement accounts. The top 0.1% now controls 15% of all U.S. household wealth.
