The Chan Zuckerberg Biohub has expanded its Virtual Biology Initiative to $1.8 billion, backed by the US Department of Energy, the National Institutes of Health, and major tech partners including Meta, Google DeepMind, and Isomorphic Labs. The DOE is set to invest more than $500 million over five years, while private tech partners contributed $300 million. The initiative aims to build AI models capable of predicting how real cells respond to drugs, mutations, or diseases. A dataset covering more than 120 million single cells and 225,000 perturbation interactions was produced in January 2026. All models and data generated will be openly accessible to researchers worldwide.
