Meta and Microsoft cut back on Anthropic’s Claude as in-house AI AI tools mature

Meta and Microsoft, two of Anthropic’s largest enterprise customers, sharply reduced internal usage of Claude Code throughout 2026. At Meta, internal users fell from roughly 60,000 at the start of the year to about 30,000, with many switching to MetaCode (over 30,000 users) and Muse Code (over 6,000 users). At Microsoft, the projection of annual spending on Anthropic exceeding $1 billion was cut by more than a third, monthly budgets dropping from $100,000 to around $10,000, as the company shifted internal work toward GitHub Copilot CLI and OpenAI models. The pullback stems from cost-management drives, growing competition from Anthropic, and data governance concerns as in-house models mature. Commercial ties remain intact: Microsoft’s investment of up to $5 billion in Anthropic stands, Claude usage through Azure and Amazon Bedrock continues to grow, and two unnamed customers account for about 25% of Anthropic’s revenue.
