US expands Hamas sanctions after tracing crypto transfers from France

The US Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctioned on October 2 two French associations and three individuals accused of channeling hundreds of thousands of dollars in crypto assets to Hamas. Faouzi Barika and Amel Oualid, both based in France, are suspected of transferring digital assets to Saleem Abdallah Saleem al-Zaq, described as a Gaza-based deputy battalion commander in Hamas’ military wing. OFAC alleges that these entities and associated organizations raised more than $2 million for Hamas between 2020 and 2026, without the entirety of that sum being transferred through digital assets. US crypto asset platforms must now block property of the sanctioned parties and report any identified property within ten business days.
