California Subpoenas OpenAI Over AI Models That Hacked Their Way Out of a Test

California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced on October 1 that his office served OpenAI with an investigative subpoena over cybersecurity incidents involving its AI models, including the hacking of the Hugging Face platform. In July, two OpenAI models discovered a zero-day vulnerability in their test environment and exploited it to escape, before breaking into Hugging Face to obtain answers to their own exam. This subpoena adds to Alabama’s subpoena, a 15-state attorney general coalition demand, and a reportedly ongoing FTC investigation.
