‘A bygone era’ – SEC proposes crypto self-custody framework for institutional investors

The SEC has proposed rules to provide regulated investment advisers and funds with regulatory clarity for crypto asset custody. The proposal would allow investment funds to hold crypto assets in self-custody under certain conditions, offering a compliant pathway where none existed before. SEC Chairman Paul Atkins highlighted that the crypto sector has grown into a multi-trillion-dollar asset class since Bitcoin’s invention in 2008, while lamenting the lack of regulatory clarity over the same period. Funds and ETFs currently hold 1.44 million BTC, representing 7% of total supply. Analysts believe this proposal could unlock broader institutional adoption of crypto assets.
