Furious debate about THORChain vs NEAR shows idealism has limits

THORChain and NEAR are clashing over the handling of stolen funds in the crypto sector. THORChain, which defines itself as a truly permissionless protocol, refuses to intervene on stolen funds despite criticism, while NEAR Intents used its automated system SHIELD to block over $500,000 linked to the Bitget hack and identified $50 million in suspicious flows. This philosophical divergence illustrates the tension between cypherpunk idealism of full permissiveness and the need to combat money laundering in the blockchain ecosystem. THORChain’s paradox lies in the fact that the protocol is capable of intervening in emergencies, as demonstrated during the May incident which caused a network halt after over $10 million was drained.
