South Korea has abolished its central Prosecutors’ Office, replacing it with two distinct entities as of October 2, 2026. A new public prosecution and indictment agency alongside a Serious Crimes Investigation Agency have taken over the responsibilities of the former body. Prosecutors can no longer conduct their own investigations, although they retain the authority to review cases, request warrants, and decide on indictments. This reform is part of the Democratic Party’s long-standing effort to separate investigative powers from prosecutorial duties and diminish centralized power within the country’s criminal justice system.
