New York City has become the first municipality to implement a ‘click to cancel’ rule requiring businesses to make cancellation as easy as signing up for subscriptions. U.S. adults spend an average of 1,080 dollars per year on subscriptions, with 205 dollars going to services they no longer use, according to a CNET survey. The FTC received an average of nearly 70 complaints per day in 2024 about hard-to-cancel subscriptions. A national click-to-cancel rule finalized by the FTC in October 2024 was vacated by the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals on procedural grounds. The FTC has nonetheless continued pursuing companies over subscription practices, including a 35 million dollar settlement with Shutterstock in May for allegedly making cancellations difficult.
