Tether freezes $550M Iran-linked USDT – Why enforcement is in focus

Share

Tether froze approximately $550 million in Iran-linked USDT at the request of a U.S. agency. According to a U.S. Senate report, 84% of 846 sanctioned or seizure-targeted wallets use USDT as their main currency, and over $600 million in USDT was traced from two sanctioned Iranian oil smugglers between 2021 and 2025. USDT’s transaction volume reached $4.4 trillion in Q4 2025, raising questions about Tether’s capacity to identify and freeze illicit transactions in real time. The expansion of StableChain, targeting 10,000 transactions per second with 0.7-second finality, could increase pressure on real-time compliance systems.
