Bittensor proposes Gamma tokens to enhance subnet collaboration

On September 28, 2026, the OpenTensor Foundation introduced at Exploit Summit a proposal for Gamma tokens, a new economic layer enabling Bittensor subnets to buy and sell compute and inference services from one another. These transferable credits would be backed by a portion of TAO emissions, transforming the token from a reward mechanism into an operational currency within the network. Currently, over 100 specialized AI markets operate on the network, with 24 subnets generating between 28 and 35 million dollars in annualized revenue from paying customers. The proposal, which received a positive reception from the community, remains at the conceptual stage with numerous technical and governance questions still to be resolved.
