Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin says cryptographic proofs could turn decentralization from a performance cost into a scaling advantage for the network. Instead of every node downloading and executing the same computations, work could be distributed across specialized participants whose results are cheaply verified through compact proofs. This would mark a shift from the traditional blockchain model where every validator reproduces the same work toward a hybrid system combining traditional blockchain properties with cryptographic verification. Buterin expects applications using parallelizable computations to become cheaper while serial transactions grow relatively more expensive. The harder constraint remains state management, which will require reliable methods to store, retrieve and parallelize data as more work is divided among participants.
